Voice-Over IP: The Next Step in Telecommunications Technology

The computerization of many technologies in the past few decades has given us great leaps forward, but there is still one industry that lags behind. For all the knowledge we have now of telecommunications and the transmission of information, we are essentially employing the same technology we were 100 years ago. There have been changes to some elements and a few components have been streamlined, but the theory and practice of telephone communication remains the same.

However, a new way of conversing locally or over great distances is currently being implemented by a few companies. By using existing technologies such as the internet and broadband connections, several telephone providers are beginning to offer Voice-Over IP or Broadband Phone Service. Usually less costly and more economic with bandwidth than PSTN ( Public Switched Telephone Network), VOIP claims only a small percentage of service in the homes of consumers. The number of individuals subscribing to this service is growing, and though it has hurdles to overcome it is very likely that one day all phones will employ bandwidth technology.
